Doctors

Today I had to go to the doctors. The health system is different here. We joined medicare when we first arrived but still have to pay $65 to see the doctors. We then get $35 back from Medicare. I went to see Damelza's doctor, Dr Dan. I told Dr Dan I was Damelza's sister and told him about her 17kg weight loss and he couldn't beleive it. He said he wondered if I was related as he'd treated my grandparents while they were in Australia last year. I was a completely different experience than going to an English doctors but then as Dan said we are paying for it.

I asked Dr Dan about the injections for Asia. I had a Hepetis A and Typhoid injection in one, costing $150, and then he gave me the swine flu jab for free. He gave me a prescription for malaria tablets but I had to get the more expensive tablets so it didn't interfere with my other medication. He wanted me to take the malaria tablets the whole time I was there but after discussing it with Dan, I decided to just take it in the areas we needed it most. I spent $400 at the chemist but ended up taking half of the malaria tablets back and getting $205 refund. Dan is going to sort out what he needs once he hears back from his doctors. One of my arms feel really dead from the injection even though the injections themselves didn't hurt at all.

We also managed to send all our Christmas presents back to England. They should arrive in 5 days but we know what the English postal system is like so I wanted to get them sent early.

  2. Hi, Glad the adventure is still going well.
About the malaria medication .... just be careful about not taking it all the time ... depending on what medication you have been prescribed, you need to take it for at least two weeks before and up to a month after you have been in a malaria area. That is perhaps why your dr advised you to just take it all the time you are there!!!! Make sure, otherwise you wont be covered!
I just had the swine flu vacc too and I'm told it does make your arm ache and leave a lump and bruise for several days afterwards!!!!
    Keep having fun,
